This year Scoil Aireagail made history by entering its first ever schools chess competition. At the Midland’s Schools Chess Finals in Portlaoise Turlough Kelly came 1st in the novice category while the team finished 2nd overall. This qualified them for the Irish Schools Chess Finals in Limerick last April. This time the team went one better and are Irish Schools Novice Chess Champions for 2008. Turlough Kelly repeated his Midlands success and is Irish Schools Novice Chess Champion. The victorious team members are Turlough Kelly, Eddy Blake, Adam Moore, and Brendan Burke.
