This year Scoil Aireagail has become affiliated to the Leinster Rugby School’s branch for the first time. In preparation for their first outing in the Senior Development Shield they visited Kilkenny Rugby Club last Wednesday where they took part in a coaching session with the local club’s Leinster Rugby Develpment Officer Barry Daly and the CBS senior side. The Ballyhale team, which was started 2 years ago to cater for pupils who do not play hurling for the school, matched themselves against the CBS pack and back line in separate sessions under their coach Mick Mcgrath, along with Barry Daly and Michael Stack, CBS coach, and then the two sides played out a physical conditioned challenge match where the stronger and more experienced city side deservedly came out on top. However the Scoil Airgeal team came out with deserved credit from the encounter and they learned a great deal about the game, in particular the physical, technical and team requirements of rugby which was an eye opener for all. The day was a great learning experience for the side as only four of them had ever had rugby experience before, with Will Bergin’s great breakaway try a standout feature. The side await their first round opponents.
