On Friday October 12th Michael Fennelly, Paul Murphy, Henry Sheflin, Tommy Walsh, and T.J Reid brought the Liam McCarthy Cup to Scoil Aireagail. The excitement was mounting all morning with the whole school eagerly anticipating the visit. The hurlers entered the hall filled with cheering fans in their black and amber colours.
Principal Pat O’Hanlon welcomed the hurlers to the school and spoke about how proud we were as a school that three of our past pupil’s were on the senior kilkenny hurling team. He presented Michael and Paul with our school team jersey. Michael Fennelly addressed the fans and praised the great facilities that we have in the school and the variety of sports that we play. He said that he had actually won an all Ireland soccer medal representing the school. Scoil Aireagail had really helped him, he said, not only to achieve success on the hurling field but in his academic life and he had got so much support over his years in Scoil Aireagail which helped him get great leaving cert results.
Henry Sheflin then spoke about how Paul, Michael, and Colin were a testament to the school and were proof that you don’t have to go to one of the bigger schools in order to make it on to the Kilkenny team. We should be very proud of ourselves and of the school, he said.
The lads were so generous with their time and allowed people to take lots of photos and patiently signed loads of jerseys and hurley’s for both students and teachers which was very much appreciated.
Scoil Aireagail would like to wish Paul Murphy, and Michael Fennelly the very best of luck in the upcoming All Star awards. Paul has been nominated for the much coveted title as hurler of the year. Michael has been nominated for an All-Star award for his position in midfield. Last year Michael won the hurler of the year award. The individual and team award winners will be announced live on RTÉ television this Friday, October 26.
