Scoil Aireagail  7-13

Carnew             0-3

On Wednesday the 23rd of October, our senior hurling team played Carnew, a team from Wicklow, in the South Leinster quarter final in Ballyhale.

Scoil Aireagail got off to the better start with the first point coming from Mikey Jones. Ronan Coffey then added another point to our scoreboard. The Carnew backs were already under severe pressure and Ballyhale managed to succeed with another two quick points from Andrew Fitzpatrick and Kevin Farrell.

The first goal of the game came when a 65 dropped short on the edge of the box. A flick of the hurl from Andrew Fitzpatrick saw the sliotar end up in the Carnew net. The Wicklow boys were getting frustrated with great defending from Jack Kenneally, Eugene Aylward and Brian Phelan not giving their markers any easy shots towards goal, in addition to Aaron Roche on goal making sure the Wicklow scoreboard stayed goalless. Three more points from the full forward line, Kevin Farrell, Andrew Fitzpatrick and Ray Cody, put  a ten point gap between the teams. Before the Carnew backs had time to settle, Kevin Farrell snatched a goal. Great team work from Scoil Aireagail then lead to a powerful goal from Ray Cody, which gave Ballyhale a comfortable score of 3-8 to 2 points going into the second half.

Five minutes into the second half Scoil Aireagail got the scoreboard rolling again with a superb shot from Andrew Fitzpatrick, which left the Carnew net shaking. Mikey Jones then added a well deserved point. Scoil Aireagail were in were well in control of the game when Andrew Fitzpatrick scored Ballyhale’s fifth goal and a well earned hat trick for himself.

Scoil Aireagail now had the game in the bag, it was only a matter of finishing off the job. Substitutes Ryan Bland, Dylan Doran, Conor Frisby, Liam Drea and Mícháel Reade were introduced. The five lads stepped up to the pace of the game with Dylan Doran and Micheál Reade scoring a goal each. Micheál then scored the closing point of the game, to leave the final score at 7-13 to 3 points to Scoil Aireagail.

Well done to all concerned especially to Mr. Murphy, manager and to Eimear Fitzpatrick, Emily Murphy, and Rachel Fitzgerald for the match report.
