As part of their English Drama programme second and third year students welcomed the Sackville Theatre Group to Scoil Aireagail on Wednesday, 5 March. Their lively production of Romeo and Juliet demonstrated that Shakespeare is as relevant today as he was 400 years ago. The Sackville players brought the ‘star-crossed’ lovers’ plight from Renaissance Verona to contemporary Ireland. This thought provoking multi-media production held the students ‘ interest throughout as Rollo (Romeo) and Jules (Juliet) struggled with a love that attempted to cross a divide between the traveller and settled communities. This was a brilliant performance with the rap one of the highlights and was a very interesting way to demonstrate in a student friendly method the many themes of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday, 6 March Scoil Aireagail first year students attended a reading by Kilkenny author Helena Duggan of her novel ‘A Place Called Perfect’. It was a great opportunity for the Scoil Aireagail students to meet the author of the novel they are enjoying so much in class. A lively question and answer session followed and Ms. Duggan signed each student’s copy of the book
