On the 26th of February, Scoil Aireagail’s junior soccer team faced off against Colaiste Mhuire Johnstown in the Kilkenny – Carlow Junior soccer FAI division 3 final. The match kicked off in Evergreen AFC and the boys started of strong with Michael Catt capitalizing on a defensive error to take the lead. This lead did not last long as Johnstown equalized shortly after. Our defense was under immense pressure and it wasn’t long until Johnstown scored a second to make it 2-1. Johnstown converted yet again early into the second half. An inspired super sub in Patrick Irish came on a change the game. Patrick Irish got one back shortly after to make it 3-2. Then the ball fell to Patrick at the half way line and he lobbed the keeper to equalize and bring the game to extra time and ultimately penalties. Sam Mansfield, Mikey Dunne, Michael Catt, Oisin Duffin and Patrick Irish stood up to take a penalty. Sam Mansfield, Mikey Dunne, Michael Catt and Oisin Duffin all converted their penalties. The game was in the hands of hero Patrick Irish who unfortunately missed brining the penalty shootout to sudden death. After a great save by Ronan Crowley, Oisin Reid stepped up to take the deciding penalty. Oisin Reid converted his penalty to win the game for Scoil Aireagail. A fantastic comeback and win means Scoil Aireagail are going up to division 2 after their first year in the competition. Well done to all involved.
