Navigating Financial Literacy in the Business Classroom: TY School Bank Initiative

This year, in their TY Business class, students had the opportunity to apply for positions with Bank of Ireland to operate a school bank through the Bank of Ireland Money Smarts Programme for Secondary Schools.

The process began with each student completing a job application form with Bank of Ireland, followed by a series of interview skills workshops in class to prepare them for the next stage.

Interviews were conducted by Sean O’ Byrne from Bank of Ireland, who carefully selected the most suitable candidates for the seven roles on the school bank team.

Once the team was established, the students wasted no time in getting to work. After completing training sessions covering GDPR, customer service, and banking compliance, they began marketing and opened the bank to their fellow students.

The school bank team comprised positions such as Bank Manager, Marketing Managers, Operations & Audit Specialist, and Customer Digital Advisors.

The students were delighted to receive positive feedback from Sean at Bank of Ireland, who commended them for their dependability, reliability, hard work, conscientiousness, and honesty.

Each member of the school bank team received a certificate of recognition and a reference letter from Bank of Ireland, which served as valuable additions to their CVs.

Overall, the experience of running the school bank was immensely rewarding, providing the students with valuable skills and practical knowledge that will benefit them in the future.
